Research Grants as Immigration Evidence: Funding, Role and Selectivity Matter
Research funding can be powerful evidence, but the legal significance depends on what the grant proves. A grant is not automatically an EB1A prize or award. The filing should identify the funding source, selection process, applicant's role and the relationship between the funded work and the immigration argument.
Applicant Role
PI, Co-PI, Key Personnel and Funded Employee Are Different
Document the Responsibility
Show the applicant's specific role in developing or carrying out the funded work.
Specialized Expertise
Useful when records explain why the applicant's expertise was important to the project.
Do Not Overstate
Participation in a funded project does not mean the applicant personally obtained the grant.

Common Mistake
Do Not Automatically Turn Research Funding Into an EB1A Award
Weak
The applicant worked on an NIH funded project, therefore the applicant won an award.
Being supported by funded research does not establish that the applicant personally received a qualifying prize or award.
Stronger
Use the grant for what the evidence actually proves.
Funding may establish leadership, competitive support, progress, resources or another relevant part of the immigration case.
